STARTING IN CHRIST

Section 1:

Your New Identity in Christ

1. A NEW CREATION

  • Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new (2 Corinthians 5:17).

As a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, you are a new creation, leaving behind your old life, and living a new identity in Him. Your new identity is being formed within you by the power of the Holy Spirit and by your cooperation with Him in renewing your mind and living a life of leaving behind old ways of thinking and acting and embracing God’s instruction for your life so you can live a godly pleasing life unto Him. Romans 12:2 highlights how to live this new life, ‘Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.’

As a new creation, you are called to live differently to the world. Old ways of thinking and acting no longer fit and define you you but His spirit and His work within you produces the new creation. But this requires your cooperation with the Holy Spirit in renewing your mind, abandoning your old life, and embracing His new life in you.

Prayerfully with the Holy Spirit consider the following:

  • What old habits or mindsets I need to abandon today to allow myself to grow in Him and give Him space to mould me into this new creation?
  • What relationships do I need to separate myself from, and what relationships do I need to cultivate to grow in Him?
  • What patterns of sins, cycles of addictions, relationships, habits do I need to repent of, receive His forgiveness and grace for?

The Lord is faithful to guide you and He may prompt you to cease specific habits, and/or start to engage in new ones. Trust Him and don’t lose hope. Don’t despise small actions of obedience as He is faithful to empower you and reward you for your diligence in seeking Him and following Him.

Remember your ultimate goal in your walk with Him, is to be transformed into His image everyday (2 Corinthains 3:18). The unveiling of the new creation is an ongoing process where each day as you seek Him, abandon your old life and embrace the new in Him, you are being transformed into His image, so that He is formed in you. Jesus Himself is the new creation to which you are being transformed.

2. A CHILD OF GOD

  • But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name (John 1:12).
  • …having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will (Ephesians 1:5).
  • For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father”. (Romans 8: 15-16).

As a believer in Christ, you are now His child adopted into God’s family and have the privilege of calling Him Abba Father. You no longer walk under the spirit of bondage and fear but in the Spirit of adoption and sonship. God, is your father, He intimately loves you and cares for you like a father cares for his own child.

Your biological genealogy no longer defines your identity, way of living, priorities and goals but your Abba Father is the one you were born from, and you live to achieve His purposes and plans for your life.

Prayerfully with the Holy Spirit consider the following:

  • What family patterns, sins, dynamics do I need to renounce and repent of to embrace God’s love and His fatherhood?
  • What areas do I need healing and forgiveness in so that I can experience the freedom God’s fatherhood and love bestows upon me?
  • Remember the Holy Spirit is your comforter and guide to the Father’s heart (John 14: 16), ask Him to reveal to you the love of the Father and heal you from any distorted view of your heavenly Father.
  • Trust that the presence of the Holy Spirit within you would release healing, renewal and empower you to forgive and receive the Father’s unconditional love for you.
  • Consider where God may lead you in connecting with the family of Christ. Ask Him to open your eyes to your new family, and to establish you in love and unity with the brethren.

For your Father knows what you need (Mathew 6:8). Trust Him with your life and allow Him to carry you through all your life’s circumstances.

3. Forgiven and Redeemed

  • In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace. (Ephesians 1:7).
  • I have blotted out, like a thick cloud, your transgressions, and like a cloud, your sins. Return to Me, for I have redeemed you. (Isaiah 44: 22).

Through Jesus offering Himself as a sacrifice, your sins are forgiven, and you are redeemed. This means, there is no shame, accusation, or record of wrongs against you in the courts of heaven. Because of Jesus’s sacrifice and your faith in Him as the complete sacrifice, you are to have clear conscious in your relationship with God.

Prayerfully consider:

– Any areas/thoughts where there is accusation against you, a sense of shame or fault. Repent of believing these thoughts by renouncing your agreement with the enemy who is the accuser of all. Declare in faith that you are forgiven, redeemed by the blood of Jesus: ‘Father, I thank you for sending your son, Jesus, to save me, redeem me and give me eternal life. Thank you, Father, for the complete sacrifice of Jesus and on account of His blood, I receive your forgiveness and redemption for my life, in Jesus Name, Amen.’

4. Justified and Righteous

  • Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1)
  • There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. (Romans 8:1).

You are freed from judgement and condemnation. You are declared righteous before God because of your faith in Jesus Christ.

As mentioned above, justification is your possession and legal right because of the offering of Christ Jesus as the sacrifice in the court room of heaven.

Consider any areas in your life where you may find yourself struggling to believe and live this truth of justification. Consider are you striving, or trying to earn a right standing with God, or do you walk in the righteousness of Christ Jesus that covers you and flows through you?

Understand that you have not only been justified, but also made holy and consecrated unto Him which will be discussed later.

5. God’s Masterpiece

  • For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10).

You are God’s masterpiece created with purpose and intention to do good works. This means that you are created with a specific design and intended purpose and mission to achieve on earth. Your life is to serve His kingdom purpose and plan for you. Your life is a tool in His hands through which His works are achieved. Stop wandering and wasting your life for senseless things. Ask Holy Spirit to reveal to you the Father’s plans and eternal purposes that were intended for you before you were created in your mother’s womb (Jeremiah 1:5).

Ask Holy Spirit to open the eyes of your understanding to understand the divine call and your inheritance in Him. (Ephesians 1:18).

Take time to reflect on how God has uniquely created you. What gifts, talents and passions has He given you? How can you use these to fulfill His purpose?

6. A Temple of the Holy Spirit

  • Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s’ (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

Your body is a dwelling place for the Holy Spirit. You are His temple. A carrier of His presence wherever you go. Your body is not your own it belongs to Him. Your body is an investment that He has stewarded in you to manage it well and for His glory.

Because your body is not your own, prayerfully consider how you use your body- the lifestyle you live, the things you engage in of actions, thoughts, substances. All things are legitimate but not all things are beneficial and edifying to the call you have been called to live, as a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 10: 23).

Prayerfully ask Holy Spirit to find His rest in your body, ask Him to reveal if there is any sin, relationship, thought, habit that hinders Him from freely dwelling in His temple. Ask Him for discernment between the good and the godly. Seek to obey Him at all costs. He is the Lord, master of the temple. He is worthy of it all. What a privilege is it to be inhabited by the Holy Spirit. May He open your eyes to the depth and seriousness of the call to be a holy temple of God.

7. One with God in Christ

  • But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him (1 Corinthians 6: 17).
  • I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. (Galatians 2:20).

You are now one in Christ. He lives in you and through you as you abide in Him. You are one spirit with Him. This means He is your source of life, your strength, your provider, your sustenance. You are never alone. You are not single but have come into partnership and full union with Christ. Who He is and what He has is yours on the account of His eternal new covenant of love which was initiate in Jesus the moment He died on the cross and united with your humanity to redeem your life and reconcile you with the Father.

8. An Heir of God

  • And if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together (Romans 8:17).
  •  Therefore, you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ (Galatians 4:7).

You are an heir of God sharing in the inheritance of eternal life and His kingdom. This means all He is and has belongs to you. Your inheritance is joy, faith, peace, love, forgiveness, and righteousness in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17).

Ask Holy Spirit, to open the eyes of your understanding to realise the depth and glory of this truth, and the reality of this inheritance, so you can truly live in the reality of your inheritance of the Kingdom on earth. By living this way, you are bringing the truth of the Kingdom on earth, so it revealed through you and for people around you.

9. Chosen and Set Apart

  • But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light (1 Peter 2: 9).
  • Before I formed you in the womb I knew you (Jeremiah 1:5).

You are set apart and chosen for a special purpose by God. He knew you before you were born. Set apart means you are different to the world, you are made holy, consecrated only to do God’s purpose and to reflect His character, His holiness. This carries a privilege and responsibility, to live your live worthy of this call.

Ask Holy Spirit to sanctify you by the word and His presence, so any areas in your life that need alignment with this call would be aligned and His glory and holiness would be revealed through your consecrated life.

Consecration is both the work of the Spirit within you, but it requires your cooperation and the governing of your will, actions, desires and thoughts unto God, so He can transform you into His very image.

10. A Citizen of Heaven, Seated in the heavenlies.

  • For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. (Philippians 3: 20).
  • …and raised us up together and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, (Ephesians 2:6).

As a believer, your homeland and citizenship is now heaven. You are seated in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. This means you have authority through Jesus over the heavenly realm and the dark forces. Your are in a position of authority, victory and power.

Ask Holy Spirit to reveal this truth to you and reveal any areas where you are not walking in your given authority and position.

Section 2:

Your Purpose in Life

  1. To know and love Christ.
  2. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind (Mathew 22: 37).
  3. Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith;that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death (Philippians 3: 8-10).

The first and greatest commandment is to love Him wholeheartedly. Your purpose is to grow daily in knowing and loving Him. Living in obedience to His commandments. True knowledge of Christ is not head information, but a living experience of personally experiencing Him as a true living God. It develops a personal conviction and confidence in Him that does not come from reading about Him, but personally encountering Him through engaging in daily walk with Him where the truth of the written word becomes life and truth in your own life.

  • To be transformed into His image.
  • But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord (2 Corinthains 3: 18).
  • ‘as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.’ (2 Peter 1:3-4).

Your purpose is to become more like Him each day, through the enablement of the Holy Spirit and as you abide in Him, He transforms you and produce His likeness in you. Your own transformation then becomes the greatest testimony of Jesus as He becomes formed in you. You become His ambassador, reflection of His beauty and majesty.

Transformation into Christ’s image happens as you surrender to Him daily, abide in His word allowing the Holy Spirit to renew you minds and align your hearts with His will.

  • The Great Commission
  • Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. (Mathew 28: 16-20).
  • Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give (Mathew 10: 8).
  • The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me,
Because the Lord has anointed Me
    To preach good tidings to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the broken hearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives,
    And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;

To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord (Isaiah 61: 2-3).

As a disciple of Christ, your mission is to make other disciples, to teach them His commandments and equip them for His purposes through the power of the Holy Spirit. To heal the sick, raise the dead, cast out demons and proclaim the good news to all.

You can start by sharing your testimony with friends or family. You can also pray for opportunities to show God’s love through acts of kindness or service.

Section 3:

Keys to living in alignment with your new identity and purpose.

  1. Intimacy with the Holy Spirit
  2. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing (John 15: 4-5).
  3.  But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. (John 14: 26).

Holy Spirit is your guide, counsellor, helper, advocate. He is your partner in your spiritual journey. As you seek Him, abide in Him, He will lead you into all truth and reveal the Father’s will and purposes for you. Ask for the Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding (Ephesians 1: 17).

Spend quiet time listening for the Holy Spirit’s voice. Keep a journal to record any impressions or Scriptures He brings to your heart. Stay alert and open to His voice which can comes through the scripture, conversations with others, dreams, vision or a still small voice within you.

  • Building your life on the Word of God.
  • For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart (Hebrews 4:12)
  • All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
  • Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock (Mathew 7: 24-25).

Building your life on the word of God, is building your life on a solid foundation that is unshakable despite life’s circumstances. The word of God is alive, active, full of life, truth to your spirit.

Make it your priority to abide in the word deeper every day, through meditation, or memorizing key verses that speak to your current season. Write them down and reflect on how they apply to your life. The word of God is full of depth and treasure. Remember the Holy Spirit is the author of the book. Ask Him to reveal Himself as you read and meditate and to give you understanding and insight of the interpretation of the word in your own life.

  • Fellowship with the saints and family of God.
  • And let us consider one another to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. (Hebrews 10: 24-25).
  • As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. (1 Peter 4:10).

Keeping the fellowship with other believers and serving them by the power of the Holy Spirit strengthens aligns you with God’s purpose and releases His spirit to accomplish His will. God honours and moves through unity with the saints. John 13: 35 says ‘By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.’ May it your priority to connect with other believers and maintain godly fellowship and relationships. Ask Holy Spirit to guide you in your connections, and aim to keep the bond of peace, love and unity with others.

  • Living a life of worship unto God
  • And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, (Colossians 3:23).

Living your whole life (relationships, career, ministry, and daily interactions) as service and act of worship to God means you live with a pleasing acceptable life unto Him (Romans 12:1).

Ask Holy Spirit to reveal to you the depth of this truth and areas where you may need to align yourself with His heart and will for you.

Think about your whole life- work, relationships, daily habits and engagements, priorities and reflect on how you are honouring God through these areas? Am I aligning with His word, His presence and voice within me?

Practical Tips to Grow Your Spirit Man

Growing your spirit man involves intentional practices that strengthen your relationship with God and help you align with His will. Here are some practical tips:

1. Reading and Studying the Bible

  • Read Daily: Dedicate a specific time each day to reading God’s Word. Start with one chapter a day, beginning with the Gospels to learn about Jesus’ life and teachings.
  • Use Tools: Explore translations like AMP, TPT, or the original text through Strong’s Concordance for deeper understanding.
  • Structured Study: Use the SOAP method (Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer) to reflect on what you read and apply it to your life.
  • Memorize Verses: Commit to memory key Scriptures that resonate with you. Pray them out loud and keep meditating on them throughout the day.

2. Building a Lifestyle of Prayer

  • Set Prayer Time: Start with a set time for example 30 minutes of prayer daily and gradually extend it. Dedicate time in the morning to seek God’s guidance for the day and in the evening to reflect on His faithfulness.
  • Pray with Scripture: Incorporate Bible verses into your prayers. For example, you can print passages that resonate with your season or faced circumstance and pray using the scriptures.
  • Pray in the Spirit: Engage in praying in tongues or deep intercessory prayer, allowing the Holy Spirit to pray through you (Romans 8:26).
  • Keep a Prayer Journal: Write down prayer requests, answers to prayer, and reflections. This will help you track your spiritual growth and God’s faithfulness.

3. Worship and Praise

  • Create a Worship Atmosphere: Start or end your day with worship music or simple psalm declarations that uplifts your spirit. Sing along or meditate on the lyrics.
  • Live a Lifestyle of Worship: View your daily actions, work, and relationships as acts of worship to God. Offer your best in everything you do, as unto the Lord (Colossians 3:23).
  • Spontaneous Praise: Take moments during the day to thank God and reflect on His goodness.

4. Fasting

  • Regular Fasts: Set aside days to fast and focus on prayer. Fasting helps you deny the flesh and heighten your spiritual sensitivity.
  • Use fasting as a time to seek God’s will, pray for breakthroughs, and realign your priorities with His kingdom.

5. Surrounding Yourself with Godly Influences

  • Fellowship Regularly: Join a Bible study group, church fellowship, or accountability group where you can encourage one another and grow together (Hebrews 10:24-25).
  • Choose Godly Mentors: Seek out mature Christians who can guide, encourage, and hold you accountable in your walk with Christ.
  • Limit Negative Influences: Be mindful of the media, relationships, or habits that hinder your spiritual growth. Replace them with positive, faith-filled inputs.

6. Practicing Gratitude and Reflection

  • Gratitude Journal: Write down three things you’re grateful for each day. This practice shifts your focus from challenges to God’s blessings.
  • Reflect on Your Day: Spend a few moments each evening reflecting on how you’ve experienced God’s presence, what you’ve learned, and areas to improve.

7. Evangelism and Service

  • Share Your Faith: Look for opportunities to share your testimony with others, whether through conversations or social media.
  • Serve Others: Get involved in a ministry or community service that aligns with your spiritual gifts. Acts of service strengthen your faith and reflect Christ’s love to others.

8. Continual Learning

  • Read Christian Books: Choose books that challenge and inspire you in your faith.
  • Listen to Sermons and Podcasts: Engage with teachings from trusted pastors and speakers. This is especially helpful during commutes or downtime.
  • Attend Conferences or Retreats: Participate in events that deepen your understanding of God’s Word and allow for dedicated time in His presence.

9. Practicing Silence and Solitude

  • Set Quiet Times: Dedicate time to be still before God, free from distractions, to hear His voice and receive His guidance.
  • Retreats: Consider personal spiritual retreats where you can focus solely on prayer, reflection, and listening to God.

10. Practicing Obedience

  • Take Small Steps of Faith: Actively apply what you learn from Scripture. For example, forgive someone, share your faith, or give generously when prompted by the Holy Spirit.
  • Daily Surrender: Begin each day by praying, “Lord, I surrender my plans and desires to You. Lead me in Your will.”

By incorporating these practices, you will grow stronger in your spirit man, deepen your relationship with God, and walk more confidently in your faith journey.
